Madonna to Receive GLAAD’s Advocate For Change Award

LGBTQ advocacy organization GLAAD has announced plans to honor Madonna with their Advocate for Change Award at the 30th annual GLAAD Media Awards. Reserved for public figures who have dedicated their work to advocating for LGBTQ rights, Madonna is the second person to receive the honor after Bill Clinton in 2013.

The GLAAD Media Awards honor artists, journalists, film and television programs and other forms of media for fair and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community. The ceremony will take place over two days beginning on March 28 in Los Angeles and culminating with the presentation of Madonna’s honor in New York City on May 4.

Madonna has made innumerable contributions to LGBTQ visibility, including her continued employment and support of LGBTQ backup dancers, speaking out against bullying of LGBTQ youth and related suicide, and boycotting the Boy Scouts of America for their LGBTQ-exclusionary policies (to name a few).

“Madonna always has and always will be the LGBTQ community’s greatest ally,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD’s president and chief executive. “From the HIV crisis to international LGBTQ issues, she fearlessly pushes for a world where LGBTQ people are accepted. Her music and art have been life-saving outlets for LGBTQ people over the years and her affirming words and actions have changed countless hearts and minds.”

Madonna’s 12 Most Memorable Awards Show Performances From The Brit Awards To The VMAs

Say what you like about Madonna, but one area she always delivers is when it comes to live performances.

Even when confronted with obstacles (or a very stubborn cape), you can always rely on the Queen of Pop to give it her all when it comes to her live routines, and that’s been showcased at an innumerable amount of awards shows throughout her decades-spanning career in music.

We’ve delived into the pop vaults and picked just 12 of our favourites...

‘Like A Virgin’ - MTV Video Music Awards 1984

The performance that started it all at the very first VMAs, the controversy surrounding her rendition of ‘Like A Virgin’ that saw her rolling around on the floor seductively cemented Madonna’s place as a pop culture icon. Little did people know, she was just getting started...

‘Vogue’ - MTV Video Music Awards 1990

Take note, Chezza and BritBrit. If you’re going to lip sync, the only excuse can be that you’re delivering a performance as flawless as this.

‘Sooner Or Later’ - Academy Awards 1991

This awards performance at the Oscars gave Madonna a rare opportunity to show off her vocals, while still paying homage to her idol, Marilyn Monroe. Sidenote: Her date to the awards that night was none other than Michael Jackson.

‘Bedtime Story’ - Brit Awards 1995

One of Madonna’s most overlooked tracks was also the only song she’d ever performed live at the Brits... until she finally returned to the UK awards bash for the first time in two decades in 2015, that is. And we all know what happened then (more on that later).

‘You Must Love Me’ - Academy Awards 1997

Later that evening, ‘You Must Love Me’ would scoop the Oscar for Best Original Song. So you see... Madonna was sort of involved in an Academy Award-winning track, which should come as a shock to anyone who’s seen ‘Body Of Evidence’.

‘Shanti/Ashtangi’ - MTV Video Music Awards 1998

After taking time out from the music scene, Madonna re-launched herself in full ‘Earth Mother’ mode with her ‘Ray Of Light’ album, helped by this performance at the 1998 Video Music Awards, which she kicked off by singing entirely in Sanskrit.

‘Like A Virgin’/’Hollywood’ - MTV Video Music Awards 2004

Indisputably one of the most iconic moments of the 21st century. Christina’s inky hair. Madonna’s shock arrival at the top of a cake. Justin Timberlake’s reaction. This performance has it all.

‘Hung Up’ - MTV European Music Awards 2005

Nothing says “disco” quite like a leotard-clad Madonna emerging from a giant glitter ball, right?

Feel Good Inc.’/’Hung Up’ - Grammys 2006

Over her long and illustrious career Madonna has collaborated with so many greats: Prince, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Missy Elliot, Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams, to name but a few.

But let’s not forget she also danced with a cartoon pop group at the Grammys way back in 2006, wearing - what else? - a purple leotard.

‘Same Love’/’Open Your Heart’ - Grammys 2014

And even last year, Madonna put in an appearance at the Grammys as part of Macklemore’s touching ‘Same Love’ performance.

While he performed his smash hit single, a number of mixed-sex couples tying the knot live on air, all presided over by, of course, Queen Latifah.

As if all that wasn’t enough, Madonna then stormed the stage to perform a stripped-back version of her hit, ‘Open Your Heart’.

‘Living For Love’ - Brit Awards 2015

The fall that was felt around the world... but say what you want about Madonna, she jumped right up and carried on with her performance.

A true pro.

Prince Tribute - Billboard Music Awards 2016

When it came to paying tribute to one of the biggest pop icons of all time, it felt only appropriate that it should be Madonna who took on the performance on his honour at the Billboard Music Awards.

Donning her best purple paisley, she whizzed through some of his most memorable numbers.

Madonna, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to perform "Same Love" together at the 2014 Grammys

Let the fun begin! The Grammy Awards are well known for organizing surprise collaborations between huge artists in the music industry, and this year is no exception. Madonna and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will be taking the stage together at the Staples Center in L.A. for the 2014 Grammys, sources confirm to Us Weekly.

Madonna, 55, and 30-year-old Ben Haggerty -- who goes by the name Macklemore alongside his producer Lewis, 25 -- will be performing the rap duo's 2013 hit "Same Love." (Us previously reported the Queen of Pop and gay icon would be providing guest vocals for one of the evening's nominees. Her appearance was officially confirmed Friday.) "Same Love" is an anthem for LGBT equality and same sex marriage.

This has been a hugely successful year for the old friends, who won for both Favorite Rap/Hip-Hip Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hip Album at the 2013 American Music Awards last November. At the Grammys on Jan. 25, they are up for seven nominations -- including Album of the Year for The Heist, Song of the Year for "Same Love," and Best New Artist.

The "Material Girl" herself, meanwhile, hinted earlier this week that she would be performing during the live show. "My lips are almost sealed! I can't say anything more. #itsasecret," she wrote on Friday, Jan. 24, with a picture of herself covered up in a thin black veil.

She added: "It's official! I'm off my crutches and I'm looking for the perfect pair of heels to wear to the Grammys." (Last Thursday, the seven-time Grammy winner sustained a minor injury from dancing in high heels.)

The 56th Annual Grammy Awards will air on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.

Madonna to Present GLAAD Award to Anderson Cooper

Gay advocacy group GLAAD says Madonna will present CNN's Anderson Cooper with an award for openly gay media professionals.

GLAAD told the Associated Press on Saturday that the singer has been chosen to give Cooper the Vito Russo Award at the 24th annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City on March 16.

GLAAD President Herndon Graddick says Madonna and Cooper are longtime friends who have both used their careers to support lesbian, gay and transgender people.

Cooper declined to speak publicly about his sexuality for years. But last July he gave blogger Andrew Sullivan permission to publish an email in which Cooper said he was gay and "couldn't be more happy."

Russo helped found GLAAD and wrote a book about gay people in the movies called "The Celluloid Closet."
