Madonna pledges to build 4 new schools in Africa in 2018 with her Raising Malawi charity

Madonna is getting “Into the Groove” of 2018 — with some charity work!

On Thursday, the pop icon announced that her philanthropic foundation, Raising Malawi, will build four new schools in the southeast African country, where the organization has already built 10 schools.

“Let’s start 2018 off right!” Madonna, 59, captioned an Instagram post. “I’m challenging you all to stand up, come together and BE the CHANGE you want to SEE in the World!! This year we’ll begin by building 4 brand new schools in the Kasungu District of #Malawi with @RaisingMalawi and @buildOn!! That’s 14 schools in total that will help thousands of kids get the education they so rightfully deserve!”

Madonna has a long history with the nation, as she adopted four of her six children from Malawi: David Banda, 12, Mercy James, 11, and 6-year-old twins Stella and Estere, whom she brought home last February. (The Grammy winner is also mom to Lourdes Leon, 21, and Rocco Ritchie, 17.)

The “Living for Love” singer’s relationship with the African country began in 2006, when she launched Raising Malawi. And this summer, all of Madonna’s efforts culminated in the charity’s biggest undertaking yet. In July, the pop star asked PEOPLE to join her and her family in Malawi for the opening of the Mercy James Centre for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care, the first children’s hospital in the nation.

CBS Sunday Morning interview: Madonna's song of hope for Malawi's children

In the world of entertainment, only a few stars are big enough to be known far and wide by just a single name. And it turns out that one of the biggest of those one-name stars has a whole second calling ... a mission of hope and healing in a place that badly needs it. Tracy Smith reports our Cover Story:

Malawi, a landlocked African nation of 17 million, is about the size of Pennsylvania, and one of the poorest countries on Earth. Disease is rampant here -- and pediatric health care is almost unheard of. But this past July, Malawi's children got some help.

To you and me, she's Madonna. But to people in the city of Blantyre, she's the lady behind the new hospital, and she was there for opening day, along with Mercy, Esther, Stella and David, four of her six children (and all from Malawi).

It was the first time she'd seen the finished building. "Oh my gosh, what a beautiful hospital!" said Madonna. "It's the brightest, most cheerful hospital entrance I've ever seen."

The Mercy James Pediatric Surgery Center (named for her adopted daughter) has new operating rooms and a children's ICU.

Liefde overwint alles.”

Malawi hails Madonna's 'motherly spirit' at opening of new hospital

Madonna was hailed as a "symbol of a motherly spirit" by Malawi President Peter Mutharika after the American singer opened a children's hospital named after her adopted daughter Mercy James.

The Mercy James Institute for Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care located in Blantyre, Malawi's second-largest city, is the first such facility built in the country by Madonna's charity Raising Malawi.

"We will ensure that not only will it be a world-class children's hospital, but also a superior center of learning. This is as much about healing as it is about empowerment," Madonna said at the hospital's official opening.

The singer adopted Malawian children David Banda and Mercy James in 2006 and 2009 respectively and twins Esther and Stella Mwale earlier this year. She has two other children, Lourdes and Rocco, from previous relationships.

Speaking at the event, Mercy James drew applause and ululation from the crowd after saying: "Many kids and many lives will be saved. Thank you mum, you're the bomb."

Madonna established the non-profit Raising Malawi charity in 2006 to provide health and education, particularly for girls. The charity has built 10 schools in Malawi, according to its website.

Madonna criticized Malawi's slow pace of law reform, saying it nearly prevented her from adopting Mercy James.

"It was not an easy battle," said Madonna as her voice cracked with emotion as she stood near her daughter.

"The judge refused me because I was recently divorced. We hired lawyers, went to the Supreme Court. But I never gave up, I never backed down," added the 58-year-old, who previously stirred anger among some Malawians as they felt the government allowed her to skirt laws that ban non-residents from adopting.

"I fought for Mercy and won. We fought for this hospital and won. Love conquers all."

Madonna then danced to a local song with Malawi's first lady Gertrude Mutharika.

Mutharika, who attended the hospital's launch, said "Madonna is a symbol of a motherly spirit" and that the hospital was Malawi's "national pride."

The health minister Peter Kumpalume said the hospital will help save lives of newborns in a country where infant mortality is still one of the highest in the world, but steadily declining.

"For our part, we will fully support the facility, we are bringing in doctors and drugs," Kumpalume told Reuters.

Malawi's infant mortality rate declined to 42 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2016 from 135 deaths in 1992, government data shows.

The Mercy James Centre To Open July 11

After two years of hard work and support from partners and donators from around the world, Madonna and Raising Malawi are delighted to announce that The Mercy James Centre for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care will officially open on July 11, 2017!

Thanks to every nurse, doctor, company, construction foreman (the list goes on) who have dedicated time, energy and effort to making this project a success. The facility will be the country’s first and only pediatric surgery and intensive care unit.

To celebrate her birthday back in 2016, Madonna launched a fundraising campaign with Omaze, inviting her fans to help create a “Rebel Heart” playroom in the pediatric facility. The new space is now ready to provide a calm, joyful space for the children to play and learn, which will help improve both their physical and emotional health. Later that year, Madonna hosted a special event at Art Basel Miami to benefit Raising Malawi and the Mercy James Centre. Profits from the evening were used to fill the hospital with equipment, surgeons and medical personnel.

Stay tuned to Raisingmalawi.org and Madonna.com, within the next days for more info and interesting facts about the hospital, its doctors and nurses, and for ways to get involved and to be a part of this historical and fantastic event!

Madonna meets President Mutharika, vows support for more Malawi projects

American pop star Mdonna on Monday met President Peter Mutharika at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe a day after she inspected construction works for a miultimillion dollar, two storey magnifiscent and the first ever padriatric ward and intensive care unit which she is funding   at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.

Presidential Press Secretary Mgeme Kalirani said in a statement made available to Nyasa Times that Mutharika and Madonna had a myriad of issues to discuss in her capacity as Goodwill Ambassador for Child Welfare in Malawi.

Among the issues discussed, according to Kalilani, among the issues discussed included projects the singer is funding in Malawi through her Rising Malawi.

Madonna’s foundation, Raising Malawi, is constructing the 50-bed children ward.

The Presidential spokesman said Madonna “informed” the Malawi leader that construction works for the project are “almost complete and that she will now be moving to the second phase of the project which is procurement of equipment and furnishing of the clinic.”

The pop diva further informed the President that the hospital shall offer “free services” with a small section for paying patients, said Kalilani.

The State House statement said President Mutharika hailed Madonna for the progress made on the project and assured the pop diva of his government’s committed to supporting her initiatives.

“The President believes the project shall have an enormous impact on government programmes aimed at saving lives of children in the country as well as on improving health delivery services in general,” reads the statement.

The children’s unit is a 50-bed ward and will enable the hospital to increase the number of surgeries for children at the hospital by almost 100%.

Once operational in early 2017, the clinic will be the first Intensive Care Unit for pediatric surgery in Malawi.

Madonna was meeting President Mutharika for the second time having first met in November 2014 when Mutharika appointed her as Malawi’s Ambassador for Child Welfare.

Prior to Mutharika’s ascendance to power, Madonna had a stormy relationship with Malawi’s ex-president Joyce Banda who stripped the pop star’s VIP status.

Banda accused Madonna of being bad-mannered and of pressing everlasting gratitude from Malawians simply because she adopted two children.

Madonna adopted two Malawian children namely Mercy James and David James who joined her during her visit to Malawi.

Madonna in Malawi to visit hospital her charity is funding

Madonna, currently visiting Malawi, is planning to visit the construction of a children's wing at a hospital that her charity is funding in the southern African country's largest city, Blantyre.

The pop star has been in Malawi for a week during which she has met with President Peter Mutharika and health minister Peter Kumpalume. Madonna, who has adopted two children from Malawi, is scheduled to visit Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital on Sunday (July 10) to view the pediatric unit where construction started in May 2015 and which is expected to open in early 2017.

"This new facility is the first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit in any Malawi hospital. It will have an enormous impact on saving the lives of children," said Madonna, in a statement released to The Associated Press. "In addition to raising the quality and availability of health care, we are also preparing for the future by training more Malawian medical staff in specialized pediatric care."

The children's unit will include Malawi's first pediatric intensive care unit, three operating rooms dedicated to children's surgery, a day clinic and a 50-bed ward. It will enable Queen Elizabeth hospital to double the number of surgeries for children and will provide critical pre-operative and post-operative care.

Raising Malawi was founded in 2006 to address the poverty and hardship endured by Malawi's orphans and vulnerable children. Raising Malawi partners with local organizations to provide Malawian children and their caregivers with critical resources including education and medical care.
