Madonna is always moving forward, reinventing her look and exploring new genres of music. On Tuesday night at San Francisco’s Chase Center, she took a step back, delivering a megamix of songs drawn from the pop-dance diva’s 40-year career.

“Aging is a sin,” Madonna says in a recorded video montage that plays toward the end of her Celebration Tour setlist. “I think the most controversial thing I’ve ever done is stick around.”
Let’s get this out of the way: She looked great. Sure, we could talk about Madonna’s face — about how we require aesthetic perfection from women, demand they stay frozen in amber after 40, then become cruel if they try too hard to maintain the appearance that’s tied to their economic and cultural value — but it’s actually the least interesting thing about her.
Nearly two hours into her epic Celebration Tour performance Tuesday night in San Francisco, Madonna briefly slowed up the show’s relentless, highly choreographed pace and shared some brief words with her audience.
