Madonna’s “I Rise,” off her 14th studio album Madame X, honors humans as they rise about adversity. The songstress, no stranger to protest herself, partnered with TIME Studios to create a video that embodies the spirit of resiliance. The Peter Matkiwsky-directed video inspired by the song, released on Wednesday (June 19), weaves together footage of Parkland shooting survivors, LGBTQ supporters, women’s rights protesters, Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman’s testimony about sexual abuse and countless other social justice movements. “I managed to survive/Freedom’s what you choose to do with what’s been done to you/No one can hurt you now unless you want them to,” Madonna belts as the powerful protest images flash across the screen.
