The Material Girl made a dramatic return to the stage on Monday, when her Re-Invention world tour kicked off in Los Angeles. Madonna’s fans were left in little doubt that she is still the Queen of Pop, after a spectacular show in which she danced up a storm.
She opened the concert in one of her trademark jewel-encrusted corsets, but quickly changed into combat fatigues to perform American Life. Many members of the audience were left open-mouthed by the physically demanding choreographies performed by the 45-year-old.
If her maturity did show in any way, it was in the political and spiritual messages that permeated the gig. Images of war and famine were repeatedly broadcast from the video screens and Madge’s rendition of John Lennon’s classic Imagine was a high point of the evening.
There was also a generous helping of her old classics, with longtime fans giving up a huge roar of appreciation when she launched into hits like Celebrate and Vogue. The fashionistas in the audience were likewise satisfied by costumes from the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Prada and Jean Paul Gaultier.
In the months ahead around 750,000 fans will see Madge strut her stuff, as she travels around the United States, Canada and Europe. Over 100 personnel are accompanying her for the tour, including twelve dancers and five musicians.
