In fine shape at the age of 57 and more than three decades into her career, Madonna brought her new show to Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona last night. The concert was sold out, as t is for tonight’s performance. Rebel Heart is a self-tribute show that makes constant self-references in a mix of the US diva’s oldest and newest songs. Remaining true to herself and her iconography, three years after her last concert in the city Madonna gave a performance that delighted her audience, many of whom had come from abroad.
After remaining at the top of the international pop scene for so long, Madonna can make constant self-references without boring her audience because what probably defines her best is her ability to genuinely reinvent herself while incorporating new trends.
Calmer than in previous concerts (with the singer at times alone on stage, accompanied only by a guitar or ukulele), the show swings between the usual grand choreographed scenes, with the video screen spitting out images in sophisticated audiovisual edits, with more intimate moments in which she also pays tribute to her fans. It is a show that suggests Madonna will be around for some time yet.
